Updated Post-Election Analysis: House and Senate Committee Musical Chairs
We’ve been tracking the midterm elections and what the outcomes in individual races might mean for House and Senate committee membership and leadership in the 116th Congress. Since August, we have continuously updated our House and Senate “musical chairs” pieces, which explored how retirements, tight races, and term limits might impact the standing committees. Now that most of the races have been decided, here are updated versions of our House and Senate analyses, coded to reflect what we know so far.
All of the currently serving incumbents who will not return to Congress in January have been crossed out. This includes those who were not running for reelection, as well as those who lost races that have already been called. Please note there remain some discrepancies between media outlets on projections for highly contested races. However, at this point, there is general consensus on a number of competitive races where we are still waiting for officials returns. Those races are highlighted and we’ll be watching closely in the hours and days ahead. Keep an eye here for updated House and Senate documents once the results in a greater number of races have been finalized.
In the meantime, we’re speaking with members and staff about committee ratios, members jockeying for new committee assignments, and committee agendas as preparations for the next Congress move full steam ahead. We’re on our way to the 116th Congress!
